STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
Incumbent will create and maintain a safe, positive learning environment to ensure the holistic development of each student and staff member through cultural, social, spiritual, physical and academic experience. Incumbent will support the Bureau of Indian Education's mission, which is to provide high quality education opportunities from early childhood through life while considering a tribe's need for cultural and economic well-being. In performing this mission, the BIE takes into account the spiritual, mental, physical, and cultural aspects of school-aged children within their family and tribal community. To meet its trust responsibility to Indian Tribes, BIE works to strengthen education opportunities for American Indian students to be successful and competitive globally; to enhance student participation in their tribal communities; and support tribes in nation-building, in development of the next generation of tribal leaders.
Responsibilities:
Performs maintenance and repairs on the plumbing systems, such as, repair or replacement of defective pipes of the water supply system; pumps and pipes of the hot water system, etc., which normally involves utilization of original routes, sizes, etc. May occasionally involve minor modifications. Replaces and/or repairs various other fixtures, such as domestic hot water heaters, faucets, P-traps, etc. Cleans clogged drains and sewer lines
Operates and maintains the heating systems which provides heat and domestic hot water to the school, administrative buildings, housing and other related facilities. Systems operated and maintained are natural/liquefied petroleum gas and oil-fired low-pressure units consisting of steam boilers and/or hot water boilers, hot water heaters, panel-ray and forced air heaters, none of which requires continuous attention, nor are they operated on a rotating shift basis. Is also responsible for the operation and maintenance of individual hot water heating systems, circulating pumps, fuel regulator and various other related auxiliary equipment performing preventative and regularly scheduled maintenance and repairs.
Periodically makes observation of meters/charts to determine such things as heat and water requirements/utilization; Pressures, water flow, etc., and determines proper adjustments necessary for maximum efficiency and utilization. Makes necessary repairs to crawl under buildings, structures and through steam tunnels to service and repair lines, traps and equipment. On an emergency basis performs major repair in needed areas and/or assists Major Repair crews. Uses common power tools necessary to accomplish required work.
Incumbent is responsible for ensuring proper operation of water well pump through periodic checks of water storage tanks for adequate water level. Performs minor service and repair and manual operation of the pumps. May periodically replace chlorination bottles on automatic systems, observes the equipment and reports operational failures or problems to supervisor. May make periodic minor adjustments. Maintains operational condition of the sewer lagoons; performs a periodic check of the gravity sewer system, collects lagoon samples in specified manner; makes periodic visual checks of the lagoons; makes necessary repairs to the protective fences and controls vegetation growth within the confines of the lagoon area. May perform routine maintenance on lagoon aerators.
Repairs floors, floor coverings, ceilings, walls, partitions, cabinets, windowpanes, window and door sashes casings and related hardware; porches, sidewalks, steps, guard rails, etc., by routine patching and/or removing damaged or unserviceable parts and replacing with identical/similar/substitute parts.
Touches up or repaints soiled or damaged painted surfaces, including interior/exterior trim, framework, walls, ceilings, floors, cabinets, doors, etc. Uses brushes and rollers to apply standard paints that have been tinted or mixed and oils, alkyd and varnishes. Clean the crosswalk area and repaint. Remark parking areas for handicapped and regular vehicles. Repaint curbs in some areas to identify loading and unloading areas, fire and emergency lanes areas, all for the safety of others.
Replaces electrical switches, switch plates, outlets, lighting fixtures, etc. Makes repairs to frayed or broken wiring. Checks malfunctions of various electrical equipment such as automatic switching units, thermostats, small equipment transformers, motors, pilot light controls, etc. Corrects problem by adjustment or replacement of the unit or defective parts. Troubleshoots electrical equipment such as sewer machine, power tools, etc., for proper working conditions.

BASIC EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
High School or GED diploma is required.
Level 02 incumbent must have a minimum of one year's experience in general maintenance or related work, demonstrating skill in at least three skill/craft areas.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Must be certified as a Water and Boiler Operator in the first year of employment.
Background investigation Required: Incumbent must undergo a comprehensive background investigation which includes, but is not limited to, contact with all references, employers, co-workers, personal associates and a review of driving record, credit history, criminal history, and military service.
A pre-employment and annual physical examination are required. Incumbents may be required to wear personal protective equipment as necessary.
A valid State Driver's license is a prerequisite because the position requires operation of a motor vehicle in performance of work. The work requires driving throughout the school compound, transport of detainees and/or travel to meet with law enforcement officials. A valid State Driver's license must be maintained as a condition of employment; failure to do so will result in removal from the position.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Incumbent must be able to lift over 50 pounds and be in excellent physical condition. Good distant vision in one eye and ability to read without strain printed material the size of typed characters is required, glasses permitted. Ability to hear the conversational voice, with or without a hearing aid, is required. In most instances, and amputation of arm, hand, leg or foot will not disqualify and applicant for appointment, although it may be necessary that this condition be compensated by use of satisfactory prosthesis. In addition, incumbents must have mental and emotional stability.
Occasionally, incumbents may be required to travel for training purposes or attendance at meetings away from the duty station.
