Position Summary

The Public Safety Aide performs a wide variety of tasks (such as responding to parking and traffic related calls, issuing parking citations, serving civil papers, and preparing related reports and/or documentation) which do not require the authority of a sworn law enforcement officer. Actual work performed will vary according to assignment. The Public Safety Aide is a civilian position within the Rio Rancho Police Department (this position does not have arrest powers). Incumbent will operate a motor vehicle as necessary for assigned tasks. The ideal candidate for this position is someone who is seeking future advancement opportunities in law enforcement with the Rio Rancho Police Department after serving in this civilian capacity. Therefore, when eligible, the incumbent must make an effort to transition (through open recruitment) to a police cadet.
Education, Training, Experience, Certifications, Licenses and Registrations

Education / higher education: High School Graduate or equivalent

Minimum number of years of directly related experience: None

Other requirements: Must be a U.S. Citizen; must be age 18 or higher at time of hire; must have no felony convictions. Must be willing to work any shift including nights, weekends, and holidays.

Driver's License requirement: Frequent Driver -- Regular Driver's License Required Endorsements: none

Note -- For any driver, driving record must always meet City driving and insurability standards.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge: Have knowledge of, or the ability to learn, applicable police procedures. Comprehend written material, learn procedures and regulations.

Skills: Must be able to type rapidly and accurately enough to accomplish the essential functions of the job; operate office equipment including computers, word processing and spreadsheet applications; respond to requests and inquiries; communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing.

Abilities: Operate a computer terminal, radio, or other communication devices in the completion of assignments. Be able to deal tactfully and effectively with other employees, law enforcement officials, and the public andbe able to successfully complete required training to include Taser certification.

Interaction with Groups/Agencies/Entities: Must establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees, officials and the public. Personal conduct (on-duty as well as off-duty) must be such that it does not bring disrepute or unnecessarily endanger the public's trust or confidence in the agency or its members.

Essential Functions

The following functions are typical for this position. The omission of specific functions does not exclude them if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment for this position. Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Assists motorists or citizens as directed by supervisor, or responds to calls for service not requiring a sworn police officer.
  • Enforces parking regulations and issues parking citations.
  • Assists with misdemeanor offenses such as simple vandalism, petty larceny, abandoned vehicle, missing person and runaways. Prepares related reports.
  • Assists with traffic accidents such as directing traffic, or provides assistance to investigative officers at crime scenes such as taking measurements, completing tow-in reports and waiting for wrecker. Collect and preserve physical evidence in the field as directed.
  • Assists and/or provides services such as funeral escorts, parades, and other community events.
  • Assists or conduct police vehicle transport activities. Picks-up and delivers correspondence or items for officers, or delivers interoffice mail between City facilities or other law enforcement agencies.
  • Completes reports pertaining to daily activities. Completes offense reports as appropriate.
  • Maintains current departmental policies, laws, and regulations and knows where to look for information if not known.
  • Maintains strict accountability of all department and individual equipment.
  • Gives factual testimony in court, including testifying in court regarding the chain of custody and integrity of evidence
  • Assists with DWI Seizure Ordinance as necessary by towing, utilizing immobilization devices, and the storage of vehicles.
