Position Summary
The Public Safety Aide performs a wide variety of tasks (such as responding to parking and traffic related calls, issuing parking citations, serving civil papers, and preparing related reports and/or documentation) which do not require theauthority of a sworn law enforcement officer. Actual work performed will vary according to assignment. The Public Safety Aide is a civilian position within the Rio Rancho Police Department (this position does not have arrest powers). Incumbent will operate a motor vehicle as necessary for assigned tasks. The ideal candidate for this position is someone who is seeking future advancement opportunities in law enforcement with the Rio Rancho Police Department after serving in this civilian capacity. Therefore, when eligible, the incumbent must make an effort to transition (through open recruitment) to a police cadet.
Education, Training, Experience, Certifications, Licenses and Registrations
Education / higher education: High School Graduate or equivalent
Minimum number of years of directly related experience: None
Other requirements: Must be a U.S. Citizen; must be age 18 or higher at time of hire; must have no felony convictions. Must be willing to work any shift including nights, weekends, and holidays.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge: Have knowledge of, or the ability to learn, applicable police procedures. Comprehend written material, learn procedures and regulations.
Skills: Must be able to type rapidly and accurately enough to accomplish the essential functions of the job; operate office equipment including computers, word processing and spreadsheet applications; respond to requests and inquiries; communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing.
Abilities: Operate a computer terminal, radio, or other communication devices in the completion of assignments. Be able to deal tactfully and effectively with other employees, law enforcement officials, and the public andbe able to successfully complete required training to include Taser certification.
Interaction with Groups/Agencies/Entities: Must establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees, officials and the public. Personal conduct (on-duty as well as off-duty) must be such that it does not bring disrepute or unnecessarily endanger the public's trust or confidence in the agency or its members.
