Position Summary

The Seasonal Park Laborer maintains parks and grounds following maintenance schedules for soil preparation, planting, watering, mowing, fertilizing, applying herbicides and pesticides, pruning and weeding and weed and litter removal.

This is a temporary position for the summer season only, lasting not more than 6 months per year.

This is a Safety Sensitive position subject to random drug/alcohol testing.

Education, Training, Experience, Certifications, Licenses and Registrations

Education / higher education: High School Graduate or equivalent

Minimum number of years of related experience: Six (6) months of work experience.

Education and/or experience preferences: Experience directly related to the purpose of the position is preferred.

Driver's License requirement: Frequent Driver -- Regular Driver's License Required Endorsements: none

Note -- For any driver, driving record must always meet City driving and insurability standards.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge: Working knowledge of the methods, equipment, and materials used in the care and maintenance of parks and recreation centers. Working knowledge of plants, their diseases, and methods of control. General knowledge of carpentry, masonry, plumbing, electrical, and other building trades. Working knowledge of automated irrigation system operation, maintenance, and installation. Working knowledge of the hazards and applicable safety rules and precautions involved in equipment operation and park maintenance and development.

Skills: The operation of tools and equipment typical in parks, facilities and play component installation and maintenance.

Abilities: Learn to operate, maintain and repair power tools and equipment used in the work. Learn how to maintain turf, trees, shrubs and other planting materials. Perform basic mathematical operations including addition, subtraction, multiplication and division and determine weight measurement, volume and distance. Effectively deal with standardized situations. Read and comprehend simple instructions, correspondence and/or memos and irrigation manuals, training guides, standard operating procedures and MSDS manuals. Write simple correspondence, reports and work logs. Communicate effectively. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other City employees, members of the public and public officials.

Interaction with Groups/Agencies/Entities: Internal: Works with craft workers and department supervisors to construct and repair parks and facilities on time and within cost. External: General public, customers, and public officials. Participates in the Sandoval County Disaster First Responds Team.

Essential Functions

The following functions are typical for this position. The omission of specific functions does not exclude them if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment for this position. Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Prepares athletic fields, which includes lining, leveling, watering and maintaining the infields.
  • Assist in the construction of capital improvement projects in the parks.
  • Perform minor semi-skilled park building maintenance on the interior and exterior, to include painting, fence repair and related park improvements.
  • Maintain, adjust and operate specialized turf care equipment and tools, including electric motors, pumps, sprinklers, tractors, mowers and irrigation systems.
  • Ensure that all maintenance equipment is in good and safe working order, by performing basic operator maintenance activities on vehicles used, including checking/filling oil and other fluids, fueling vehicles/equipment and checking vehicle equipment operations.
  • Assist with the installation and maintenance of watering systems, including checking and repairing/replacing valves/sprinkler heads, repairing/replacing leaking pipes, digging trenches and installing new pipelines.
  • Assist in connection of water line to City water meters.
